ABOUT ASTHMA

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell, which may produce extra mucus. This mucus can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out, and shortness of breath. For some, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.

Asthma can be easy to deal with if upcoming attacks are identified in advance so that the child can be assisted and the attack prevented.

ASTHMA CHALLENGES

  • Asthma primarily affects children under 12, who are often unable to recognize signs of an upcoming asthma attack until it is too late to ask a parent for help.

  • The majority of childhood asthma attacks happen during sleep. This prevents quick response times towards indications of an attack.

  • Asthma attack severity is minimized or even prevented by acting promptly, but this requires indication or awareness of an upcoming attack.

  • No method currently exists to alert the patient of an upcoming asthma attack, especially during sleep, so that action can be taken.

  • Children need assistance to deal with asthma, but emergency contacts and adults with the child, such as teachers and parents, must be aware of an upcoming attack.

AROUND-THE-CLOCK MONITORING

When a child is away from parents, or at school, lessons, or sporting events, the device will help recognize when an attack is about to happen so that the child can act swiftly.

NAFAS notifies emergency contacts — whether parents, teachers, coaches, babysitters, or school nurses — while the child is away from parents through the NAFAS smartphone app.

Similarly, when an adult or child is sleeping, the device sends an alert via a flashing light and alarm sound to the emergency contact or caregiver for help.

Severe asthma leads to attacks that are difficult to manage, and every second counts. The alert will notify the person of an upcoming attack early, giving more opportunity for reaction time.

ADVANTAGES

It is designed to monitor the patient's breathing throughout the day — and at night. No longer do patients have to worry about waking in the middle of an asthma attack without warning

The NAFAS sensor is proven to increase the likelihood that the patient (most likely a child) will wear the sensor since it is comfortable (thin and small) and does not interfere with sleep and daily activities (a powerful magnet keeps it on tight).

It gives valuable time to prepare for an oncoming attack and respond accordingly by giving an early warning to the patient and emergency contact.

Valuable data is tracked over time so that tendencies and patterns can be identified.
